Who is buying
The employer list for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2020 puts Napa Valley Unified School District first at 1,735 employees, the County of Napa second at 1,507 and Queen of the Valley Medical Center third at 1,209. Napa Valley College, Kaiser Permanente, Walmart and the Napa Valley Wine Train appear after them. The hospital at 1000 Trancas Street has 208 beds and a Level III adult trauma center, and the state hospital in Imola reported 2,338 employees in fiscal year 2016-17. These are employers, not customers, and we use them only to understand when people are on the move.
Wine is the visible industry, and the Napa Valley AVA, established in 1981, has 47,216 planted acres in about 700 vineyards. The county's Wikipedia page says as many as five million people visit the area each year, and Napa's page says wine drives jobs in wineries, restaurants and hotels.
